Logaston Walking The Old Ways of East Beconshire and the Black Mountains

PRODUCT DETAILS

The walks in this book have been devised with the aim of exploring the area’s past, with each walk passing or visiting features about which some background information is given. These include towns and villages, churches, chapels, prehistoric burial sites, holy wells, hillforts, Roman forts, castles and castle sites, canals, tramroads and railway lines, mills, almshouses, mansions, reservoirs, along with information about certain individuals. Several of the sites included can only be reached on foot.

The routes have also been chosen to provide walks that include the main settlements as well as traversing a range of countryside, from river valleys to hilltops, crossing fields and passing through woodland, and using paths, bridleways and country lanes.

The walks range from 3 to 10.25 miles in length, with most being between 4.5 and 7.5 miles long. Each walk has a sketch map and detailed directions, together with background information about features that can be seen en route.

We hope that the combination of photographs and text, together with the index, will make the book more than simply a book of walks, but also a companion to – and celebration of – the Black Mountains and east Breconshire, an area we have come to know over the past few decades.

Andy Johnson has lived in Herefordshire for close on 40 years, Karen for 20. Both are keen proponents of travel on foot, having also crossed France, traversed Spain and walked half way down Italy by such means. They have walked the routes in this book at least twice, in part to check the conditions and directions in different seasons. They are also keen to encourage people to share their love of the area and the geology and history that helps shape this piece of the Marches.
